Freiburg tried their best but couldn't compete with VfB Stuttgart's goalscoring abilities. The home side won the match 4-2 to secure their first three points of the season.
No goals were scored in the first half but Mainz broke the deadlock after eight minutes in the second. In the aftermath of a corner kick, Boka's left-winged pass found Pavel Pogrebnyak who had no difficulties netting his first ever Bundesliga goal.
The Russian was again of great importance in the 65th minute, and it was a foul on him that earned Stuttgart a penalty. Elson took it and easily converted for 2-0.
Freiburg got one back in the 70th minute though, as a poorly marked Mohamadou Idrissou received the ball from Abdessadki and struck home from about nine meters.
But Stuttgart soon restored their lead to seemingly remove all doubts. With 76 minutes on the clock, Elson netted his second with a great strike from about 25 meters.
Idrissou again gave the visitors hope in the 86th minute though. This time, the Cameroonian striker slammed it past keeper Lehmann after a corner kick.
That second goal was Freiburg's last sign of life though and Stuttgart went on to make it 4-2 in the penultimate minute. Substitute Julian Schieber was the one to provide the final goal from about 16 meters.
Stuttgart are now in seventh position while Freiburg, who drew last week's game, are second from the bottom.
