Ajax' new manager Martin Jol watched as his team earned a rather simple victory over FC Groningen in their first game of the season.
The away side scored their opening goal shortly before the break. Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl laid back to Miralem Sulejmani, and the latter smashed it home from close range.
While Groningen created a fair share of chances in the first half, the home side lacked the energy and skills to put pressure on Ajax' defense in the second.
Instead, Ajax began to force more opportunities themselves and netted a second goal in the 72nd minute. Rommedahl, responsible for the assist of the opening goal, now scored himself after a pass from Luis Suarez.
