Sunderland lost their final match of the season 2-3 to Chelsea, but remain in the top flight as all other teams at the bottom of the Premier League lost their games as well.
Nicolas Anelka scored the opening goal in Chelsea's favor just after the interval, but Kieran Richardson levelled from close range just minutes later.
Chelsea restored their lead on 75 minutes though as Salomon Kalou struck from the edge of the penalty box, leaving keeper Fulop stranded.
Ashley Cole secured the victory ten minutes later, firing home for 1-3. Kenwyne Jones got one back with the head on 90 minutes but it was too little, too late.
Despite the defeat, Sunderland finish in 16th place and are guaranteed at least one more year at the top level.
