Newcastle United no longer form part of England's top flight. The Magpies lost 1-0 to Aston Villa and spend next season at a lower level.
The only goal of the match came after 38 minutes and as if it wasn't painful enough, it was an own goal from Damien Duff, redirecting a Gareth Barry shot, to put the last nail on Newcastle's coffin in minute 38.
The away side did have some chances in the final phase but it wasn't meant to be for Alan Shearer's men. To add to the misery, David Edgar was sent off with a second booking near the final whistle.
The defeat marks the end to a 16-year stay in the Premier League. For Villa, the three points guarantee their fifth-place finish.
