Liverpool remain in Manchester United's tracks while Newcastle United are in even more trouble than before, following a 3-0 result at Anfield Road.
Yossi Benayoun scored the opener on 22 minutes. Dirk Kuyt tried a shot from the right side of the penalty area and Benayoun stood at the right place to tip in from close range.
Kuyt's name would appear on the score board a few minutes later, heading home from a Steven Gerrard corner kick.
The third and final goal came shortly before full time as Lucas Leiva's header converted a right-winged free kick for 3-0. About ten minutes earlier, Newcastle had Joey Barton sent off for a challenge on Xabi Alonso.
Liverpool were the better side in all senses, and fully deserved the three points.
