Athletic Bilbao vs. Sporting Gijón

The match was almost over as a contest by the half hour mark. Sporting began the match very much on the front foot and looked the most likely to score but by the time Athletic Bilbao had scored their threat was all but over.

A controversial penalty from a corner after two players had collided in the area in the sixth minute took the “stuffing” out of the visitors. Fernando Llorente scored from the spot. A cross from David Lopez was met by the head of Llorente whose header appeared to be going into the top corner of the net. However, fellow-striker Ion Velez headed it back where defender Andoni Iraola was on hand to shoot into the net. The third and final goal came just after the half hour mark when a Francisco Yeste cross was volleyed in by David Lopez. Athletic Bilbao did take their foot off the gas in the second half allowing Sporting an opportunity into the match but they were unable to take advantage of the situation.
