ISTANBUL, EINDHOVEN, Dec 5 (SW) - Galatasaray ended their European adventure this season with a 3-2 win over Liverpool while PSV Eindhoven lost 1-3 to Girondins de Bordeaux.
Galatasaray - Liverpool 3-2
None of the sides had very much to play for in Group D, as Liverpool and PSV had already secured a spot in the next round while Bordeaux were certain of playing in the UEFA Cup.
In Istanbul, Liverpool initially took the lead through Robbie Fowler in the 22nd minute. The striker was somewhat fortunate when somehow scoring from a Bellamy cross.
But the Turkish home side quickly turned things around. Necati Ates levelled for this team by taking advantage of bad defense and striking home in the 24th minute.
And four minutes later, a powerful distance shot by Okan Buruk even left Liverpool trailing 2-1.
The win seemed certain for Galatasaray when Sasa Ilic scored for 3-1 in the 79th minute, netting after a pass from Mehmet Güven.
Fowler scored one back for Liverpool in the 90th minute but this could not change anything about the fact that Galatasaray were to take the victory.
Eindhoven - Bordeaux 1-3
The French only needed seven minutes to open the score at the Philips stadium. A through-ball by Darcheville reached Julien Faubert, who easily put it past Gomes for 0-1.
In the 25th minute, a second was added as Stephane Dalmat found his way past defender Alex and chipped the ball over Gomes' head to double the lead.
And twelve minutes later, Bordeaux even netted a third. Darcheville, who had allowed Faubert to score the first one, now got one himself. The striker first beat Gomes and his following low shot was missed by a defender on the goalline.
In the second half, PSV pushed to get one back and eventually scored for 1-3 in the 87th minute, when the Brazilian Alex beat Bordeaux' defense from a free kick.
